FIFA World Cup golden ball is one of the most prestigious awards in football. It is awarded to the best player of the tournament at the end of World Cup. This award was first introduced by FIFA (with the collaboration of Adidas) in 1982 World Cup. 

The award was introduced in 1982 but it was also awarded to the best players of all previous World Cup tournaments and a list of winners of golden ball (from 1958 to 1978 world Cups) was published in 1982. The winner of the golden ball is selected by the FIFA governing body, technical committee and sports journalists from different countries. 

They select three top performers of the whole tournament and winner and runners up are selected on the basis of voting points. Winners get the FIFA Golden Ball and Silver Ball is awarded to first runner up and Bronze Ball is awarded to second runner up.
