Ronaldo was very close to join Arsenal

Cristiano Ronaldo was very close to join Arsenal in 2003 and he had several meetings with ex-Arsenal boss Arsene Wanger to finalize the move. Portuguese star himself revealed this in an interview with Piers Morgan.

Portuguese captain could have been a Gunner's striker instead of Red Devil. 18 years old Ronaldo impressed some of the world’s best coaches when he was playing for Sporting Lisbon and Arsene Wanger was one of them.

Gunner’s boss was the first person who approached the management of Sporting Lisbon to bring the Portuguese boy to English premier league. Ronaldo seems thankful to Arsene Wanger for his effort to bring Cristiano to EPL.

In November 2003, Ronaldo met with Wanger for discussing the possible transfer. Everything was finalized between Cristiano and Wager but move could not be successful because Arsenal was not willing to pay £12.24 million transfer fee to Sporting Lisbon.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was also trying to sign the future superstar. United agreed to pay the transfer fee of winger and finally Portuguese moved to Premier League to become the greatest player in football history.

He spent six seasons in Old Trafford and won three Premier League titles and one Champions league title. Ronaldo also received Ballon d’Or, European Golden Shoe award, UEFA Club Footballer of the year award, UEFA Club Forward of the year award and FIFA world payer of the year in 2008.

Ronaldo gave an interview to Piers Morgan for ITV and he shared the whole incident of his move to Premier League from Portugal. Piers Morgan is a huge Arsenal fan and he asked Ronaldo about the Arsenal move.

Portuguese replied, “It’s true that I was very close, one step away. Incredible. They’re a fantastic club. “It didn’t happen, but I appreciate what they did for me, especially Arsene Wenger”.

Ronaldo broke down into tear when he mentioned his father Jose Aveiro. He said that his father could not see his success and rise as a football player. He was only 20 year old when his father died and he could not share the best moments of his life with his father.

Piers asked him about his girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez, Portuguese replied that he will marry to her one day which is the dream of his mother as well.

Piers Morgan is a huge Arsenal fan and he also gave Cristiano an Arsenal shirt with CR7 name on it. Ronaldo also tweeted about that interview and called it as the most relieving interview of his life.
